Description of the wine Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg 2023
Sommerberg is an extraordinary Grand Cru located in the village of Niedermorschwihr, just north of Turckheim. Often compared to the vineyards of the Côte Rôtie because of the succession of small, very steep cirques facing south. Sommerberg is a granite terroir that is difficult to work, second in steepness after the Rangen in Thann. For the moment, the estate only has a small plot of 0.32 ha which should increase to 1.2 ha in the coming years. This granitic hillside is sunny, but located in a closed valley, it is early under the shadow of the Vosges mountains which reduces the sunshine by a few hours in the evening. Geological profiles have shown great depth of soil which comes from the alteration of the two-mica granite. Still young, the vines show a remarkable adaptation to the hot and dry climate. This vine is entirely planted with a massal selection from the oldest vines of Brand.

Tasting notes
01/2025: pale golden yellow colour. The nose is immediately characterized by a beautiful demonstrative crystalline purity where we find fresh white fruits (pear) and flowers (meadow). Despite a moderate power, this 2023 imposes itself on the palate with its purity, a juicy and salivating texture. It is a suave and elegant wine with a beautiful length on the finish. This discreet persistence confirms the verticality and energy of this granite soil. The silky palate almost makes us forget that this wine is very dry.

The Sommerberg Grand Cru of Niedermorschwihr
This little 0.32ha vineyard was acquired in 2010 by Pierre-Emile and left resting for 2 years before being replanted in Riesling in 2013 from our own massal selection at high density (9000 vines/ha).
