Description of the wine Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique 2023

Of the 5.5 ha of Clos-Sain-Urbain, a small half is planted with Pinot Gris. The oldest vines go back to 1963. After the purchase of this steep hillside in 1977, some plots were planted with this grape variety between 1978 and 1999. Initially, my father Léonard's first instinct was to favour Riesling, but the first results obtained on this extraordinary vineyard (especially the 1983 vintage !) also showed the potential of this grape variety on volcanic soil. The youngest vines, some vintages, do not enter the Grand Cru, but when their quality approaches the old vines, we vinify them separately in this cuvée. The Pinot Gris from this terroir often ferments quickly and finishes on a very dry balance.

Tasting notes

08/2024: Bright yellow colour. The nose expresses with intensity the volcanic terroir of the Rangen. The aromas, close to reduction, are in fact typical of the wines of this Grand Cru: flintstones, smoke, wet pebbles. These aromas intensify with aeration and evolve towards spices and light toast. The palate is gripping, powerful, and persists for a long time on the finish. The texture is suave, saline, with a velvety mouthfeel on the attack which becomes racy in the finish where the acidity takes over. This Pinot-Gris Roche Volcanique is a serious wine and will be capable of a beautiful evolution over time. What a great wine!
